Waterfront Residence in Miami Beach

Sea Me Dive was contacted by a client to help with their washout. Due to extreme erosion, the client’s yard was washing away! We had to stop it before it was too late and prevent further erosion from happening. In order to do this, we built a new retaining structure. The structure was made of concrete and shaped into an arch. Through this process, we were able to work towards Sea Me Dive’s ultimate goal: to preserve waterfront properties.

In order to build this arched structure, we had to start by constructing a solid foundation using concrete rip-rap bags. We embedded steel rebar within the concrete, in order to ensure that the structure would be able to withstand the immediate and long-term stresses imposed by the environment.

The next step was to create a 4-6 inch thick concrete cap on top of the uppermost layer of the riprap. This pour-in-place cap added additional stability and acts as a binding layer for the structure. To further reinforce the retaining wall, we installed two tie-back anchors. These anchors connect to a concrete dead man box, a buried anchor that provides tension, preventing the wall from tilting or collapsing under pressure.

Project description

With the main structure secure, we then focused on reinforcing the water-facing side. We applied a layer of basalt mesh, a strong and flexible material, which was then coated with hydraulic 6000 PSI concrete. This both reinforced the waterside and gave it a clean and even look.

The final stage of the project involved moving new backfill to the reclaimed and upland areas of the new retaining structure. This fill material helps to rebuild the lost land, providing a stable and usable area behind the retaining wall. By carefully compacting and grading this fill, we created a solid and level surface that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

This was such a cool project, and it was amazing to work on preserving the shoreline. If you’re experiencing erosion and washout, contact Sea Me Dive today!
