Hurricanes can absolutely ravage the areas they hit. In 2019, Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas as a Category 5 storm. This storm decimated the Bahamas, leaving many areas in dire need of repairs. In light of this, Sea Me Dive went to Coco Cay for two weeks to help.
Once we arrived in the Bahamas, we began the inspections. We performed numerous inspections underneath vessels and catwalks to determine the extent of the damages. Sea Me Dive efficiently identified and marked areas that would need repairs and/or replacement. After the storm, it was found that all of the brackets required repairs. They were fixed, readjusted, and secured on both sides of the pier. Then, we removed a 114-foot section of aluminum rail using forklifts and bags.
While we were certainly busy on the landside of things, there was no shortage of things to be done in the water! Our divers started by tying eight marker buoys to sections of the catwalk that became broken and submerged during the storm. These marker buoys were then attached to a crane, which pulled the sections out of the water and onto a barge. After these big pieces were removed from the water, we focused on removing the miscellaneous debris from the water. We searched under the different piers and pulled out all of the trash and things that we found.
Through all this hard work, we were able to help Coco Cay look beautiful again after this tragedy. We at Sea Me Dive love giving back to our community, and it is amazing when we can use our talents and experience to help out!
